Music makes
'The World' go 'round
Theatre Review - Oregonian - 8/5/00 by Holly Johnson
It's amazing how much
story can be wrought from good song lyrics and how often songs reach the
heart of a plot that an entire evening of theatre might merely circle
around.
"The World Goes 'Round: The Songs of Kander
and Ebb," a spare yet stunning musical review offered by the Broadway
Rose Theatre Company, takes us through mini-plots and denouements, through
revelations and character sketches by way of the lyrics of Fred Ebb, who
with composer John Kander has collaborated on major Broadway shows since
the mid-1960's.
.....
Patrick Spike has directed a fine cast of five
performers .... who provide visual and vocal contrasts to the evening
.... Sharon Maroney kicks off the evening with the philosophical
"And the World Goes Round" from New York, New York, a number
that breathlessly builds as it ponders the singular joys and agonies of
life. The Company cuts up aping caffeine-induced mania in
"Coffee in a Cardboard Cup" ... which accelerates with each
chorus.
.....
They're high points in an evening rich with
show-stoppers that include an off-beat Modern Jazz Quartet-inspired
arrangement of "Cabaret."
